State Representative Ryan Spain and Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell hosted a free drive-through Prescription Drug Drop-Off event in Peoria on Saturday, August 7 which collected over 1,000 pounds of unused medications to be safely incinerated.

“These are really potent, important substances and we have all accumulated a lot of them around our homes,” Spain said. “This is one way we can offer a good service to our community so they can be disposed of responsibly.”

The event took place in the Schnuck’s Parking Lot off North Knoxville Avenue in Peoria on Saturday morning. A lineup began half an hour before the official start time of the event. A free 3′ x 5′ Illinois-made American Flag was gifted to the first ten participants. In total, over 150 vehicles came through on Saturday to safely dispose of unused prescription medications, prescription ointments & patches, pet medications, and vitamins.

“I want to thank Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell and PCSO Captain Chris Watkins for their willingness to host and help out with this event to help keep prescription drugs from getting into the wrong hands in our community,” said Rep. Spain.

The prescription drug drop off was an outdoors event that allowed attendees to remain in their vehicle while taking care of this important household task.
