National Medal of Honor Day recognizes those who have received the highest military award for valor. Since its creation in 1861, only 3,517 members of the armed forces have achieved this great honor.
One of these select few individuals is Illinois native Hal Fritz of Peoria. Fritz was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1971 “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”
