Bills Filed to Provide Relief for IL Families

State Representative Ryan Spain (Peoria) recently filed legislation that would provide relief for residents and businesses across Illinois. Spain’s bills are part of the House Republicans’ “Relief for Working Families” legislative initiative, which is focused on reducing the financial burden on middle class residents.

Two of Rep. Spain’s bills in the Relief for Working Families package include:

  • HB3821: Increases the maximum education expense credit from $750 to $1,500.
  • HB1383: No tax on tips; Creates an income tax deduction for gratuities that are included in the taxpayer’s federal adjusted gross income.

With the high cost of living and doing businesses in Illinois, Rep. Spain has carved out his two common-sense initiatives to bring relief home.

The tax credit for education expenses is a great asset for Illinois families, who have the weight of a rising tax burden year after year.

“Creating an avenue for needed relief is something that every family across our state can get behind: if we are helping boost education, while easing the burden on families, lawmakers are doing their jobs.”

On the business side, Spain’s ‘no tax on tips’ policy is what he calls a win-win for both businesses and the workforce.

“We need to consider how we can instill successful growth in our business community while also sustaining employment—they go hand in hand,” said Spain. “Creating the ‘no tax on tips’ policy would help stifle any labor shortage, while ensuring businesses have the staff to succeed.”
