The Illinois Credit Union League announced this week that State Representative Ryan Spain (R-73rd District) has been named their 2025 Legislative Champion for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and significant contributions to the credit union movement. This is the inaugural edition of the award, with Spain being recognized in the Illinois House of Representatives and State Senator Dave Koehler (D-46th District) being recognized in the State Senate.

Throughout the past year, Senator Koehler and Representative Spain have both demonstrated unparalleled commitment to the credit union industry, showing leadership on critical issues.

“We are truly grateful for Senator Koehler’s and Representative Spain’s leadership in the Illinois General Assembly. We appreciate their knowledge and understanding of issues important to the credit union industry,” said Ashley Sharp, SVP State Advocacy and Legislative Counsel, Illinois Credit Union League. “The strong support of leaders like Senator Koehler and Representative Spain will ensure that credit unions can continue to meet the financial needs of consumers across Illinois.”

Illinois credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions owned and controlled by their members, committed to the people helping people philosophy. Credit unions provide financial products and services with favorable rates and lower fees. The industry is active in advocating for a favorable operating environment for credit unions doing business in Illinois.

“I’m honored to receive this recognition as 2025 Legislative Champion from the Illinois Credit Union League,” said Deputy House Minority Leader Ryan Spain. “Credit unions are a valuable part of our financial system that provide their members with access to financial services in a uniquely personalized way. Going that extra mile for members makes a meaningful difference. I look forward to continuing to work with credit unions to ensure Illinoisans have access to the best financial services possible.”

Senator Koehler and Representative Spain received the 2025 Credit Union Legislative Champion Award at the Illinois Credit Union League’s State Legislative Summit in Springfield on April 8.
