Spain-sponsored bill to lower fees for business services heads to Governor

Advancing Senate Bill 1573 to the Governor this week, State Representative Ryan Spain moved legislation to reduce Illinois’ fee to become certified as an electronic notary public.

“Business leaders who rely on notaries public will be able to hire more Illinois notaries under this legislation and will reduce barriers to entry for new electronic notaries,” said Spain.

Under current law, individuals who become a notary must pay an additional $25 fee to become an electronic notary public in Illinois. Senate Bill 1573 allows that fee to be waived for two years. This reduces upfront costs and makes it easier for more Illinoisans to become certified while giving the Secretary of State’s office time to work on a permanent fix.

Notaries play an important role in verifying signatures on legal documents and ensuring the integrity of various types of transactions. This legislation is especially helpful for industries like real estate, legal services, and small businesses involved in interstate commerce. By reducing upfront costs, the measure helps increase access to notary services across the state.

Senate Bill 1573 previously passed the Senate under the Sponsorship of Senator Li Arellano and now goes to the Governor for signature or veto.
