DCEO’s Office of Broadband and the University of Illinois will be inviting residents and local organizations in Northwest Illinois to a series of in-person listening sessions regarding broadband expansion. The events will give the public and local government leaders a forum for asking questions and providing input about the region’s most urgent needs and priorities related to high-speed internet connectivity and access. People also can participate in information sessions and listening sessions by going to https://broadband.uillinois.edu/
The community events are one way that Illinois residents can contribute to the state’s plan to invest federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s (IIJA) Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) and Digital Equity (DE) programs. With this federal funding, we have a generational opportunity to close the digital divide in Illinois. Local residents know better than anyone what the needs are, where the gaps are, and how internet access, computing devices, and related skills can impact their day-to-day lives.
